Kāinga Ora Multiple Trading Trial

In her role at Ara Ake, Briony supported the Kāinga Ora team to share the benefits from solar panels installed on 160 state-owned homes in Wellington.

Any solar generation consumed on-site reduces tenants electricity bill, whilst any excess energy exported to the grid is sold to the wholesale market generating revenues. This allows Kāinga Ora to reinvest in new solar installations and keep up maintenance on panels.

The trial is on-going with regulatory exemptions provided by the Electricity Authority to enable behind-the-meter splitting of on-site consumption and exported solar generation. It was the first innovation trial in New Zealand to obtain exemptions. It received the Energy Project of the Year Award at the Energy Excellence Awards in 2024.
